| Congratulations
to COGST swimmer Rebecca Cooke who claimed
three titles as well as three
British Records at the British Short
Course Swimming Championships in
Stockport (14-17 August 2003).
Rebecca
continued to dominate the distance
events when she took gold in the
Women’s 800m Freestyle in a new
British Record time of
8:19.82. |

However,
the World Championship bronze medallist had to
fight for her title against Canadian swimmer
Brittany Reimer who Cooke had eventually
beaten for a place on the podium in Barcelona
last month.
Rebecca
trailed her Canadian rival until the half way
mark but put together a strong finish to take
over a second off her previous record to
finish in 8:19.82.
“It
felt quite comfortable. I’m doing personal
bests a lot lately although I knew the
Canadian would be tough competition,” said
Cooke. “It was great to race her."
“I’m
swimming at the World University Games in
South Korea next week so I’m working towards
that. The World Championships gave me a lot of
confidence – it was great to win a bronze
medal.”
Britain’s
oldest national record fell in the women’s
400m freestyle final as double Commonwealth
gold medallist Rebecca took her second title
and her second British record in the space of
24 hours. She bettered June Croft’s 1984
mark by over a second to win in 4.03.46.
“I
Really wanted to get that record and I knew I
was capable of doing it and it’s about time
it went,” said Cooke.
Rebecca,
already the winner of two golds and the
British Records that went with them in the
400m and 800m Freestyle, made it a hat-trick
of titles over the four-day meet when she came
from behind to take the 400m Individual Medley
event in 4:38.18, a full second off the
previous record.

of all Rebecca's swims are shown below.
