Two Golds for Rebecca at the French Championships!

COGST swimmer Rebecca Cooke (right) won the 800m Freestyle and 400IM and finished second in the 400m freesyle at the recent French Olympic Trials in Dunkirk.

Women's 400 Freestyle Final

17-year-old French swimmer Laure Manaudou dominated the 400 freestyle race from the start chasing her national record established two months ago. Britain's Rebecca Cooke and Claudia Poll of Costa Rica tried to go with her but could not maintain the speed.

Manaudou sprinted to the title in 4min 08.97sec. Rebecca stepped up the pace to drop Poll to come home in 4min 10.30sec for second place, faster than she recorded in Sheffield at the trials.

Freestyle specialist Rebecca Cooke gave her rivals no chance to escape on her weaker strokes and for thee-quarters of the race was in touch with her British record. But with no one to chase after the first few strokes of the final freestyle leg the record slipped way as she came home a clear winner in 4:48.19. Celine Cartiaux led the French swimmers home in 4:51.79.

The question at the start of the women's 800 freestyle was just how fast could Laure Manaudou go. Up against the world bronze medallist City of Glasgow's Rebecca Cooke, Manaudou was ahead at 200m and  300m but Cooke closed up by the 400 mark to take the lead at 450.  Rebecca came home first in 8:29.02.

“It was a really positive swim for me to finish off the meet,” said Cooke. “Things are going well for me, I was pleased with the race tonight and I know that if I can change the odd thing during my race then I can go a lot faster.

“I changed my tactics tonight and they worked well. I knew Manaudou would go out fast as she has a lot of speed but I stayed with her until 400m and then took control of the race.”
