COGST Win Clyde Coast Winter League 2000!

In the final round of the Clyde Coast Winter League at Dumfries, 9th December,  City of Glasgow overcame Kilmarnock and Dumfries for a fourth win in a row to secure top spot in the League. The match result was:

COGST 181
Kilmarnock 125
Dumfries 112

Glasgow also won four Medley Relay Trophies (10 & under Girls, 12 & under Boys (shared), 14 & under Girls and 14 & under Boys). 

Well done to all COGST swimmers who took part.

November 2000

Third Victory in a Row for COGST in Clyde Coast Winter League

The third round of the Clyde Coast Winter League was held in Blantyre on the 11th November. COGST came through this match comfortably winning by 61 points. 

Match Result.

COGST 192 pts
Blantyre 131 pts

The final match will take place on Saturday  9th of December in Dumfries. Our opponents will be Dumfries and Kilmarnock.

The second round of the  Clyde Coast Winter League took place on Saturday 23rd September 2000 at the Citadel Leisure Centre, Ayr. The result of the match was:

COGST 183 pts
West Dunbartonshire 122 pts
South Ayrshire 113 pts

The first round of the Clyde Coast Winter League on Saturday 2nd September 2000 at Tollcross saw Glasgow victorious over some tough opposition. Over 50 COGST swimmers took part in the "A" or "B" teams with many fine performances to keep the crowd cheering. The final score was:

COGST 157 pts
North Ayrshire 131 pts
Ren 96 130 pts

Annual Awards Night

The annual awards night took place on Saturday the 26th August at the Cooper Institute on Clarkston Road, Cathcart More details about the winners here!


At the Millenium Commonwealth Youth Games at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh (11-13th August 2000), Scottish Junior record holder Louise Coull took silver in the 200 metre backstroke and  bronze in the 4x100 metre medley relay events. Louise, after a fourth place in the 100 metre backstroke, overhauled England’s Julie Fort in the second half of the 200 metre race to claim silver behind Australian Alissa Searston in a time of 2:18.63 seconds.

In the 4x100 metre medley relay the Scottish quartet of Louise Coull, Kirsty Balfour, Laura McGarvey, and Carey Abel slashed twelve seconds off the national junior record to grab the bronze medal.

Kellogg's Frosties National Age Group Championships.



At the recent National Age Groups in Coventry (7-12 August 2000) Charles Mills (right) won a silver medal in the boys 13 years 200m butterfly (2:21.68s) and a bronze in the 100 butterfly (1:05.51s) event. 

Taylor Wamberg came 6th in the final of the boys 13 years 200m backstroke. Well done to all Glasgow swimmers who took part in these Championships.

Admin support in place

We can finally report, as highlighted at the club’s AGM in May, that a part-time, permanent admin support appointment has been made by the City of Glasgow Swim Team. Following a large number of applications (35 in total), leeting and interviews, Pauline Thompson has been appointed to this key role. Pauline, who has a background in both local council employment and sport, started work in the office on Monday 21st August. More details, including her exact remit and direct telephone number (as yet not available), will be published in October’s News Splash.

Success for Glasgow at the Nationals!

City of Glasgow had a number of successful swimmers at the Scottish National and Youth Championships on 7th-9th July at Tollcross. Louise Coull and Claire-Jane McPherson became Scottish Champions for 100m and 200m backstroke and 100m breaststroke respectively.
  The women's relay teams won gold in the 4 x 100m medley relay, 4 x 100m and 4 x 200m freestyle relays.
  In the Scottish National Junior Championships Chris Brannan won gold in 4 events and Louise Coull won three gold medals. The junior relay teams also won three golds.
  In the Scottish National 17-18years Championships, Sarah Whiteford won Gold in the 100m freestyle event. Details of all winners can be found here.

Success for Louise at European Junior Championships!

Louise (far right) is photographed on the podium after receiving her bronze medal in the 200m backstroke event. Irina Raevskaia from the Russian Federation won gold and Louise Ornstedt of Denmark took the silver medal. 

The European Junior Championships were held in Dunkirk, France at the end of June and City of Glasgow's Louise Coull, representing Great Britain had a successful competition, winning a silver medal in the 4x100m medley relay (Louise Coull, Kirsty Balfour, Gemma Howells, Lisa Chapman) in a time of 4:16.44, less than a second behind the winning Russian team.
 Louise also won bronze in the 200m backstroke event with a time of  2:17.14s and finished 8th in the 100m backstroke event.
