Rebecca makes Olympic 400m Freestyle final!
City of Glasgow swimmer Rebecca Cooke finished eighth in the Olympic 400m freestyle final in Athens tonight (Sunday 15th August). Rebecca was the surprise package of the morning with a gutsy heat swim to make it through to the final eight after setting a lifetime best of 4:08.18.
She led from the start in her heat to carve 1.31sec off her time and qualify fifth fastest.

“The final decision on whether or not I swam this race was only made a few days ago,” said Cooke, who’s specialist event, the 800m freestyle, takes place on Thursday.

“I’m really excited about swimming in the final tonight. It’ll be my first Olympic final and the atmosphere here is fantastic. It’s been really good.”

Rebecca was unable to reproduce the startling form that made her the surprise qualifier for the 400m freestyle final. She was three seconds down on this morning’s lifetime best and finished eighth in 4:11.35.

“It just didn’t flow tonight compared to this morning. I just tried too hard and I needed to relax more. I proved my speed is there this morning so at least that’s looking good for my 800m event on Thursday,” she said.
