Michael Wins Gold at ASA National Age Group Championships!
 

Congratulations to COGST swimmer Michael Jamieson who had a great ASA National Age Group Championships at Ponds Forge Sheffield, winning the boys 14 years 200m breaststroke event. Michael also had two 4th places in the 100m breast and 200m individual medley. 

Andrew Park and Aileen Stirling also had a successful championships reaching three finals apiece.

In the Youth Championships, Suzanne Robertson came 5th in the final of the 200m backstroke.

Rebecca Wins Bronze in World Championships 800m Freestyle!
Saturday 26th July

COGST swimmer Rebecca Cooke (right) took bronze in the final of the Womens 800m Freestyle at the World Championships in Barcelona.

On Friday Rebecca qualified for the final coming fourth in 8:32.95 In the final Rebecca held off a challenge from Brittany Reimer from Canada to come third in 8:28.45.

Hannah Stockbauer from Germany made it a double in the distance events winning both the 800m free in 8:23.66, a Championship record and 1500m free. Diana Munz from the USA came second in 8:24.19.

Well Done Rebecca! 

  


Rebecca Seventh in World Championships 1500m Freestyle!

Tuesday 22nd July

COGST swimmer Rebecca Cooke smashed her own 1500m freestyle British Record by over two seconds at the World Championships in Barcelona to qualify for the final.  In the final Rebecca led in the early stages before finishing seventh in a time of 16:20.41. Hannah Stockbauer from Germany won in a Championship record of  16:00.18s.

Rebecca also swims in the 800m freestyle event on Friday. Good luck Rebecca!

COGST Win MiniLeague Again!
  
On Saturday 24th May at the Citadel Leisure Centre City of Glasgow won the Clyde Coast Mini League Final for the fifth year in a row. Congratulations to all COGST swimmers who took part in the Mini League matches throughout the season.The final placings were:

Robert Raises £200 for Charity
  
On Saturday 22 March 2003, Robert Wilmot of City of Glasgow MASTERS raised £200 for charity by swimming in his eighth SWIMATHON. This year Robert took on  the ‘endurance swimathon’ of 10,000m and completed the event in 3hr 16min 36sec. Well done Robert! 
Money raised will go to MacMillan Cancer Releif.

On Saturday 22 March 2003, Robert Wilmot of City of Glasgow MASTERS will swim his eighth SWIMATHON. Although this event is usually 5 kilometres (a little over 3 miles) this year Robert will attempt the ‘endurance swimathon’ of 10,000m and he's looking for sponsors.

 COGST Win Team of the Year Award

At the recent Glasgow City Council Sports Awards 2002 City of Glasgow Swim Team won the best sports team of the year and our Head Coach, Steve Hill, won the Best Male Coach of the Year. Congratulations to Steve and our swimmers on winning these prestigious awards!

   COGST Graded Meet 2003
 

The City of Glasgow Swim Team Long Course Graded Meet will take place at Tollcross on Saturday 11th January 2003. Once again the Meet has proven extremely popular with teams coming to Glasgow from all over the country. A draft programme can be found on the Meets Page

It is important that all COGST timekeepers and officials please try to come to this meet to ensure it's success. Anyone willing to help on the day (not necessarily on poolside) should contact any committee member or e-mail   

Club members will now have the opportunity to sponsor individual events at the COGST Long Course Graded Meet. Please look out for the letter which you will receive soon in the post. 

We also plan to run a tombola at the Meet and any donations would be greatly appreciated and should be passed on to Kathie Robertson, Pearl Punshon, Pool Reps or Coaches.

City of Glasgow Annual Awards Night took place in the Coupar Institute on Friday 20th September 2002.

   West District Junior Open Championships
Dunoon, 5\6th October, 2002
  

 COGST swimmers had their best ever West District Junior Championships at the Riverside Leisure Centre, Dunoon recently. The Team amassed 13 gold, 15 silver and 16 bronze medals as well as 31 4th-6th places and eleven West District Records.

Top performers for the girls were Chantal Carr (5 gold and 1 silver), Aileen Stirling (3 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze), Laura Galbraith (1 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze), Suzanne Robertson (1 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze) and Kirstie Muir (1 gold and 1 bronze).

The most successful boys were; Daniel Burns (1 gold and 2 silver), Andrew Park (1 gold and 1 silver).

   Flooding Closes Springburn Pool

Due to flooding Springburn pool will be closed for the next two to three weeks. Training arrangements for Springburn swimmers are as follows:

   COGST West Area Parents Meeting

Parents and swimmers are invited to attend a meeting in Knightswood Community Hall on 22nd August 2002 from 7.00 to 8.00pm. This meeting will give you an opportunity to meet Lindsay Powell, West area Head Coach, the coaching team and committee members. Lindsay will outline the programme for the year and answer any queries that may arise at the meeting.

COGST Best Team at the Scottish National Open and Age Group Championships

COGST 'A' Win Mini-League Final!

On Saturday 15th June City of Glasgow A team took part in the Clyde Coast Mini-League Final at the Citadel Sports Centre, Ayr. In a closely fought competition COGST came out on top for the fourth year in a row. The final result was as follows:

COGST 'A' qualify for Mini-League Final

City of Glasgow A team have qualified for the Clyde Coast Mini-League Final at the Citadel Sports Centre, Ayr on Saturday 15th June 2002. The A team, holders of the Trophy for the last three years qualified again this year in first place. This year for the first time COGST also ran a B team which came a creditable 9th in the league. 

The warm up for the final is at 5pm for a 5.30pm start. We need to supply officials and timekeepers for the final. Could volunteers inform Dave Hill as soon as possible please. For full details of final league positions and previous fixtures follow the link below:

Grand Prix Final attracts top British Swimmers

The second COGST Long Course Meet incorporating the Speedo Grand Prix Finals takes place at Tollcross from Friday 17th to Sunday 19th May 2002. Our meet has attracted almost all of the top British swimmers in the run up to the Commonwealth Games later in the year and should provide some exciting swimming especially in the newly introduced "skins" events.

COGST are running this meet so it is vital that as many officials and other helpers from our own club volunteer to come along and make the event as successful as possible. If you want to help in any capacity please contact any committee member or e-mail me at for more details.

COGST Swimmers Selected for Commonwealth Games!!

At the British Championships and Commonwealth Trials in Manchester, 10-15 April,  Rebecca Cooke won the 400m and 800m freestyle events and Holly Fox took gold in the 400m Individual Medley event to secure selection to the England team for the Commonwealth Games in July.

On Sunday 24th March City of Glasgow competed in the Premier Division of the Speedo National League for the first time. In a closely fought match COGST finished in fourth place. The final score was:

COGST Swimmers Represent Scotland 
at Schools International

Congratulations to the five COGST swimmers who represented Scotland at the Schools International at the Inverness aquadome on 23rd March.
 

 
In the individual events, new COGST swimmer Jamie Griffiths was second in the 100m breaststroke in a new club record of 01:11.51s. Katy Taylor came third in the 100m fly in 01:06.25s, also a new club record, and Chris Brannan was 4th in the 200m IM in 02:16.47s. 

Barry Andrews and Hannah Dewar also represented Scotland in the relay events. Barry was a member of the Junior boys 4 x 50m freestyle relay team which set a new British Schools record at the meet. 

The final result of the match was:

England 155 pts
Scotland 110 pts
Ireland 96 pts
Wales 79 pts

Scotland won the FG Uglow Trophy for the most improved team.

City of Glasgow "A" had a successful start to the 2002 Clyde Coast Mini League campaign with a convincing win over Kilmarnock and Renfrew Baths at the Galleon Leisure Centre, Kilmarnock on Saturday 10th March. The final score was:

Success for COGST Swimmers at Stirling!

At the recent Stirling Junior Open Meet, COGST swimmers had some outstanding performances with the girls winning the best team trophy. The best individual performance was from Katy Taylor who took 5 Golds and a Silver medal and won Best Girl in her age Group

COGST Long Course Graded Meet
 

Our first City of Glasgow Long Course Graded Meet at Tollcross on 12th January proved to be a great success with COGST winning both the boys and girls Best Team trophies. The meet was so successful that next year it may be extended to two days to accommodate a greater variety of events and to allow more young swimmers to experience a long course meet at one of the best pools in the country. West District Senior Open Championships

Fine performances for former Reading swimmers, Rebecca Cooke, Holly and Bryony Fox and Jenny Clayton produce medals and records galore in their competitive debut for City of Glasgow. 


COGST Swimmers in Inter-Counties Championships

Three City of Glasgow swimmers were selected for the Scotland West Team at the Inter Counties Championships at Ponds Forge in Sheffield on the 28th of October. 

Charles Mills came 7th in the Boys 14/15 years 100m Fly in a new Club Record time of 1:01.31. Katy Taylor was 12th in the Girls 14/15 years 100 Fly also with a new Club Record time of 1:08.19. Suzanne Robertson, the  third COGST swimmer in the competition finished 12th in the Girls 12/13 years 100 Back in 1:11.48. 

The Scotland West Team, in their first year in the First Division, came a highly creditable 8th out of 20 teams.

British Short Course Championships

CJ McPherson was our only swimmer at the ASA short course championships in Norwich from 9th to 12th August. Her best performance was 5th place in the 200m breaststroke in a new club record of 2.32.48. 
 


COGST Swimmer selected for Scottish Youth Squad

Congratulations to Katy Taylor who has been selected to train with the Scottish Youth Squad. Katy earned selection to the squad for her 1:01.71 in the 100m freestyle event at the Scottish Nationals in July.
