Tollcross Closure Print E-mail
Update 20th February 2009

Please click READ MORE below to see the schedule for the relocation of squads during the closure.

Tollcross pool will be closing from 28th February until 25th May for essential maintenance. All squads have been relocated and the programme will start on Monday 2nd March.

There will no training at Tollcross on the 28th of February or 1st March.

This relocation of squads has been an enormous task to undertake and we are grateful for the support and flexibility all the pool managers and Culture and Sport staff have shown whilst drawing up this schedule. The best use has been made of the water time available in the other pools to ensure that all squads have been accommodated.

Please bear in mind that this is a temporary arrangement, Tollcross is shut for essential maintenance and it is impossible to replace the capacity of a 10 lane, 50m pool easily. We realise that this will be an inconvenience for swimmers/parents but it is unavoidable and is for a limited period of time.

Please also consider that there might be some teething problems in the first few days of the new regime, due to pool staff having to get used to the new schedule etc. These pools are not normally open these hours and adjustments will have to be made accordingly. We are extremely grateful to all pool staff in these venues for being willing to assist COGST during this period.

The relocation of swimmers has been done by squads, with 8 squads, about 150 swimmers and around 6 hours of pool time each day it would be impossible to take into account any individual swimmer’s needs or domestic situations. If you have any individual circumstances that you wish to discuss regarding the relocation, please submit them in writing, either via the website or directly to the Secretary, when they will be passed onto the Technical Lead for consideration.

The final decision on all training matters will lie with the coaches - the Management Committee trust their expertise and will support their decision in this matter.

Linda Walsh
COGST President

Bearing in mind the short notice given to parents what alternate arrangements have been made to accomodate siblings who train in different squads? The new schedule does not appear to allow for this, however, perhaps this is something the Committee have already looked into and therefore look forward to receiving your reply.

WOW!!
Someone has worked very hard on this, complex does not even get close.
It is only for 12 weeks and it will soon be over.
3 questions
1/ Could the Coaches taking each session be added?
2/ If Perf & Nat. have the same Coach? how can the Coach be in two places at the same time? e.g. Mon & Tues evenings.
3/ Has any consideration been given to the odd LC session, at Stirling or elsewhere, when does EK reopen? (might as well make use of the Sat. Navs)

Good luck to all the swimmers, as the saying goes "a change is as good as a rest"

Lorraine Izzett  - new training times   |2009-02-19 21:23:23
Dear COGST
I really appreciate the hard work put into finding suitable locations for the various squads when Tollcross pool is shut. However, I am very concerned as I have two children Lauren in National age and Kieran in National development it will be practically impossible for me to get them to two different venues. I work full time as a teacher and am a single parent with no other support network. But I do not want my children's swimming development to suffer especially as Kieran is sitting with 5 National consideration times. Is there any flexibility with coaches? Hope you can help me in my concerns

Maree Airlie  - children in different squads   |2009-02-20 08:51:43
Dear committee
As with the other parents, I do understand how difficult it must be to relocate a club the size of Glasgow to other pools. However, I am in the same situation as Lorraine, with one child in National Age and one child in National Development. I too, as many others, work full-time - in Stirling - and cannot see how I could manage to get both children to different venues after work. The morning sessions (which is the ones we generally do) are proposed to be at the same time in different pools, which is obviously not feasible if you have more than one child. Would there be any scope in doubling the squads up for some of these sessions and splitting them between pools? As I'm sure you appreciate, I'm not trying to be awkward, just to find a solution which is workable in the short term.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards, Maree Airlie

avatar I noted in the recent press release that Culture & Sport issued during the week, might I comment before the club was formally informed. They confirmed that the public would be offered free transport to Easterhouse Swimming Pool from Tollcross Leisure Centre. They also commented on several occasions how they would be ensuring minimal disturbance to the City of Glasgow Swimteam during this difficult time. I would like to propose that the City of Glasgow Swimteam request free transport from Culture & Sport to the various centres across the city. I am sure all parents/members would agree this would certainly help us get through the next few months.

Many thanks for all the effort that has been put into this.

Same issue for my family as others. Two kids in different squads to train at different pools at the same time. Nigh on impossible.
