City of Glasgow swimmers continued their good start to the new season by winning the Scottish National Junior Team Championship for the fourth year in a row! The event, held at Tollcross International Swimming Centre last weekend, pitches the top ten teams in the country against each other in a one-day head to head points competition. Only one swimmer per team is allowed to race in each event with the result dictating the points, which then accumulates throughout the day to decide the overall team champion. Clubs can only use swimmers aged 16 or under but to add an extra layer of strategy, swimmers can only contest two events each and all teams must include at least four boys and four girls who are aged 14 or under in their overall squad.
The Glasgow swimmers were up against strong opposition, particularly from the Edinburgh based Warrender club. However, winning swims in the first set of relays and some strong individual swims established an early lead. It was close throughout with every highly placed Glasgow swim being countered soon after by Warrender successes. As it often does in these types of contests, it all came down to the final two relay events where a bad swim or a disqualification could prove fatal. Undeterred though, the Glasgow swimmers finished in style taking the win in both races to secure the title for the fourth successive year.
From the 34 contested events, the Glasgow squad took no less than 24 top three finishes, with 12 wins, and 6 second and third places to emphasise the strength in depth in the team. As well as the four relay swims, individual winning performances came from: Katie Shanahan (400 Free, 400 IM), Mark Ford (100, 200 Butterfly), Ryan Robertson (100 Backstroke), Elise McQueenie (200 Backstroke), Saskia Wade (50 Freestyle) and Louis Lawlor (50 Backstroke). Shanahan’s time of 4:47.42 in the 400 IM was also a new 14 year old girls Scottish Age Group record.
Head Performance Coach, Ian Wright commented on the club’s results: “We’re really thrilled to win this event for the fourth year in a row. On paper we were ranked second but the swimmers performed well above expectation and kept us in a tight battle with Warrender throughout. We had a good first half but got even better in the second half showing great determination and positivity to push for the win. I’m very proud of the whole squad but must also commend coaches Danielle Brayson, Heather Albin, Moureen McDonald and Lewis Smith for the work they’ve done with these swimmers in the past few weeks to get them ready.”
Final overall team points were as follows:
1st City of Glasgow Swim Team 322.5
2nd Warrender Baths Club 301.5
3rd University of Aberdeen 208
4th Dundee City Aquatics 197
5th South Lanarkshire 188
6th East Lothian Swim Team 186
7th North Lanarkshire 175
8th Heart of Midlothian 167
9th Dumfries Dolphins 165
10th Swim West Lothian 162

The club has arranged for a dietician to give presentations on nutrition at Tollcross on Tuesday 2nd October.
These will be held in the Edrom Suite from 6-7pm and from 7-8pm, so that you can attend while your child is training.
She will cover healthy eating, what to eat before and after training/swim meets etc.
If you have anything specific which you would like to ask, please let us know in advance so that we can ask her to cover it.
You do not need to register in advance for these talks – please just come along on the evening.
